The bats in the belfry will have company this weekend
by Greg Becker
Cleveland-On Saturday, June 5, the openly gay pastor of Archwood United Church of Christ will be in church's open-air steeple watching for people to place food on the front steps of the church.
Rev. David Bahr will be 85 feet above those steps, praying to receive 2-3 tons of non-perishable food for the Brookside Center. The food from the 11th annual "Archwood
Rev. David Bahr
1
Steeple Vigil" will be distributed to families in need.
In March alone, 758 families received emergency food assistance, up from 651 families just a year ago, representing over 1,800 individuals, half of whom are children.
"Obviously things are not improving for those at the bottom of the economy," remarks Rev. Bahr. "We have to ask why so many people need our help and what can be done."
Therefore, the weekend will begin with a forum, "Moving From Just Collecting Food to Economic Justice," on Friday, June 4, at 7 pm, in the Archwood UCC sanctuary. This part of the event is being organized by the congregation's social justice committee.
Dr. Edith Rasell, Minister for Labor Relations and Community Economic Development of the UCC, State Rep. Dale Miller, Cleveland Councilmember Merle Gordon, Charles See, executive director of the Community Re-Entry Program, and Brookside Hunger Center director Janet Thomas will address the issue. A panel discussion and questions will be held following the presentations.
On Saturday, from 8 am to 5 pm, there will be a large rummage sale, as well as homemade baked goods and hot foods. In addition, up to 50 homes on Archwood Ave. hold a yard sale up and down the street. At the same time, the church will be open while individuals
hold a prayer vigil for the needs of the neighborhood.
